Jean Améry (1912–1978), born Hanns Chaim Mayer, was an Austrian author. During World War II, he participated in the organized resistance against the Nazi occupation of Belgium, and was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo. He was imprisoned in the Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps from 1943 to 1945. He died by suicide in 1978.
