Jean Epstein

*1897 FR

French film director, theorist, literary critic and novelist born March 25, 1897 in Warsaw, Tsardom of Poland within Russian Empire. Remembered today for his adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall Of The House Of Usher, he directed about thirty films and was an influential critic of literature and film from the early 1920s through the late 1940s. He's often associated with French Impressionist Cinema and the concept of 'photogénie'. He died April 3, 1953 in Paris, France.
