Singer / Musician of Country
American bluegrass bassist and singer JIM COX hails from the southwestern Virginia community of Vansant. He was part of a musical family in which all members played and sang. Through his association with the Country Gentlemen, Jim is primarily regarded as a bass player but he was an accomplished clawhammer banjo/guitar player/singer as well. While stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia in his late teens, Jim played in a band called the Valley Troubadours. The Korean conflict put a damper on his musical activities. He returned to the States after being wounded. Following his discharge, he rekindled his interest in music. In the early part of 1958, Jim auditioned for a spot with the Country Gentlemen. He was immediately hired and stayed through the fall of 1960. Since leaving the Country Gentlemen, Jim drifted into musical obscurity and no details of his post-Gentlemen activities are known.
