"A few months before recording for Supreme the McShann band with Witherspoon recorded a number of sides for Modern records, these were eventually released as either by the Al Wichard sextett or Hootie McShann's orchestra. [...] The other sides in this collection come from various sessions between 1949-1953 with fine accompaniment by bands led by Buddy Floyd and Maxwell Davis." "Modern also recorded Witherspoon live at Gene Normans 'Just Jazz' concerts at Pasadena [...] On these numbers he was backed by the bands of Roy Milton and Gene Gilbeaux."
