"Umfeld is an audiovisual production created in HD with audio meticulously composed for 5.1 channel surround. The work portrays a series of environments; moreover, it’s a world on its own where sound and image blend together, synthesizing a highly unique spatial experience. The piece is an intense audiovisual expedition that takes the audience through eight chapters comprising a drama drawing on the dynamic arc of a feature film, but consisting of highly abstract sounds and images. Soundscapes dynamically modulate through rhythmic, upfront, and subtle passages, always using the surround audio environment to it’s full potential. In synchronicity with the sound, the images move through an array of contrasting worlds ranging from cold organic black and white synthetic animation to boldly colorful angular compositions with their roots in photo and cinematography captured in the old industrial harbor of Paap’s hometown of Rotterdam. Together the exploration of sound and image build upon each other creating and examining detailed worlds of composition and form with a deep embedded desire to forge a progressive approach to the worlds of sound and cinema." (Umfeld.tv) "Region Free 77 is an audiovisual piece in surround sound consisting of 77 segments which play in random order. This piece takes the viewer through a collection of highly dynamic micro-compositions varying in length between a few seconds to over a minute. Where Umfeld resembles a cinematic experience with a linear story, smoothly leading the viewer from one environment to another on a fixed time-line, the non-linear approach of Region Free 77 can be seen as an installation, creating a sequence of moments which sometimes blend together smoothly and other times cause abrupt changes in mood and pace depending on how the system arranges the segments. Using the concepts of generative composition, Paap and Pagano designed their segments carefully to both fuse and burst apart, allowing for a dynamic and explosive flow of sound and image."
