John Ashby was born in 1915 on Sherbon farm, west of Warrenton in Fauquier County, Virginia and died May 1979 In the early '30s, John, his brothers and cousins put the band together and took the name "Free State Ramblers" from a section of Fauquier County where the 19th C. inhabitants had formed a Free State to avoid taxes.
