1965 Joined the Royal Marines Band Service aged 14. 1968 Became Leader of the Orchestra in HM Yacht Britannia and studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music as well as Royal Yacht deployments. 1977 Completed the Bandmasters' course at the Royal Marines School of Music and gained the professional qualifications of the Royal Academy of Music 'LRAM' and the Guildhall School of Music 'LGSM' 1980 After a period as Leader of the Orchestra of the Royal Marines School of Music John undertook the advanced Conductors course at the Royal Academy of Music. It was atthis time that his interest in composition burgeoned, resulting in over 20 published works including two marches featured in the band's previous recording 'Marches Of The Sea' and the concert overture 'The Falklands' recorded in 1986 by the Band of the Scots Guards. 1980's Appointed Bandmaster of the Staff Band, Chief Instructor in higher training at the Royal Marines School of Music. 1984 Became the youngest Warrant Officer 1 in the Band Service, appointed Director of Music to the Flag Officer, Plymouth, a position he held for 4 years. 1988 Returned to RM School of Music as The Supply Officer Music, editor of the Blue Band Magazine and Sponsor Officer for the Royal Naval Band Service. 1992 Appointed Director of Music to the Band of The Royal Marines Commandos. 1993 Promoted to Captain. 1993 Founded Clovelly Recordings Ltd., Clovelly Recordings
