'Shadow' and personal minder to Frank Zappa. Also referred to in FZ recordings as 'Bald-headed John'. Smothers' pronunciation was much an inspiration for Zappa's 'conceptual continuity' lyrics. Very much a 'presence' in Zappa's touring & live performances (after the incident when FZ was pushed off-stage) Smothers originally ran a limousine & bodyguard business in Baltimore called 'Smothers Brothers'.
