John-Carlos Perea is a Grammy Award winning Native American vocalist, multi-instrumentalist (bass, cedar flute, drums and percussion), composer and writer originally from New Mexico. He is also an ethnomusicologist and assistant professor of American Indian Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. When he was a student as SFSU he studied Northern-style pow wow music with Dr. Barney Hoehner-Peji and sang with Dr. Hoehner-Peji’s pow wow drum group, the Blue Horse Singers. He released his first solo album, First Dance, in 2001. Perea shared a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 2008 as a member of The Paul Winter Consort for the album Crestone.
