American blues guitarist, bassist and singer. Nickname : "Geechie". Born : October 18, 1906 in Canton, Mississippi. Died : November 22, 1968 in Jackson, Mississippi. Moved to Jackson c. 1920, learned guitar from his step-father, Slim Duckett. Borrowed many songs from Skip James with whom he lived and played in Jackson before he went to Chicago in the early 1930s. First recorded there in 1935, became popular plues singer. Associated with the Harlem Hamfats, a 'swing blues' group mainly composed of musicians from Jackson and New Orleans (from "Deep South Piano" by Karl Gert zur Heide)
