Artist Portrait

Jonathan Young

Pop and Rock

Jonathan Young: Born in Belfast. Worked with many groups and musicians in Ireland, notably Van Morrison. He moved to England in 1967 settling in Manchester working as a solo act, in the northern cabaret circuit. with such stars as Ken Dodd, Edmund Hockridge, Bob Monkhouse, and the late Matt Monro. He has written many songs, and was encouraged by Manchester United footballer Pat Crerand to write a football song, notably Northern Ireland's world cup song in 1986, and “Thank you Jack” for Eire in 1994. “Busby’s Dream “ which was selected as the tribute song to be played at Old Trafford, following the death of Sir Matt. His song “Manchester Morning” is played most weeks on Manchester’s G.M.R station. Written 20 years ago, it could be the anthem for the Commonwealth Games. Acting is something he exceeded in. Starting as an extra in Coronation Street , he worked his way up to bigger parts e.g. “Harry’s Game,” “Shoot to Kill” “The Glory Boys” (acting as Rod Steigers’ Bodyguard). Playing the leading role in “The Van Boys” he earned rave reviews at The Cannes Film Festival. In 1995 he had a change of direction when John Stokes and Kevin Neill were looking for a lead singer guitarist to join them in reforming The Bachelors. They needed to look no further than J.Y. the ideal person for the Renaissance. Now The Bachelors are more than ever in demand with their summer seasons, cruises, regular trips to Australia and one night stands, he puts all other interests on hold. Not complaining, J.Y. says ”Life as a Bachelor Boy is great!”
