Josef Albers (March 19, 1888, Bottrop, Germany – March 25, 1976, New Haven, USA) was a German-born American artist world-renowned as a teacher of art and as a colour theorist. In the 1950s, Albers taught young painter/designer Charles E. Murphy color theory and painting at Yale School of Art and Architecture. Murphy later commissioned artwork from Albers for various cover designs Murphy art directed for the Command Records label.
