Textfile from CD Baby download: Though best known for dance music hits in the `70s, `80s and `90s such as "Mellow Lovin"," "Don’t Wanna Love Again", "Reach", and "Respect" Cheeks is finally fully embracing her legacies as the daughter of the legendary gospel singer Reverend Julius Cheeks and the goddaughter of the incomparable Sam Cooke. When Judy Cheeks describes her fascinating international musical journey as an emotional rollercoaster, she is not exaggerating. Though she was born the daughter of gospel music legend Reverend Julius Cheeks, and is the goddaughter of the legendary Sam Cooke, her first recording was a blues album produced by Ike Turner when she was just 19 years-old, followed by session work at Motown in L.A., a pop duet in German and English, backup singing with greats ranging from Stevie Wonder and Donna Summer to Brothers in Rhythm and Alphaville, monster club hits throughout Europe into the `90s on the Salsoul and Polydor labels, and now - 40 years later – her first full-fledged contemporary gospel album, True Love is Free, produced by veteran Michael B. Sutton. “Some might call this a Gospel album,” Judy says of her latest sonic inspirational wonder, “but I call it a ‘Truth Album.’ I made a commitment to God about my music. If I feel a certain way, I’m always going to be honest.” The first single “Happy” is the kind of rousing soul-shoutin’ testimony that gets believers on their feet like Mavis Staples up in the club! The full 10-song album moves from the James Brown inflected “Come On Over Where Love Is,” the Swiss-precision guitar groove “Into the Fire” and the techno club message anthem “Without Love We're Lost” to the reassuring “ A New Day Is Coming,” the warm and mellow “Love Song” and the soft southern soul of “He’s Got His Hands On You”- vaguely reminiscent of Prince’s “Purple Rain” and the heartfelt anthem, "I Love Praising You". “I tell Christians, ‘Don’t buy the arm band that says I represent God so I’m allowed to hate you or judge you,’” Judy states! “God is absolute love…like warm honey being poured all over you. That’s how it feels to be in His presence. If I don’t get that message out, I’m going to explode!”
