KCHÖRTOO is an alternative rock project inspired by the Ural lore. It was started in 2010 as a solo project by Stepan Samokhin (a.k.a. Stephan Friedman), who was born in the Urals and is currently residing in the Levant. From the Russian, K Chortoo (“к чёрту”) translates literally as “To the devil!”, which can be used either as “Go to hell!”, or as a response to the “break a leg” wish, depending on the context. The field recordings and samples, which permeate KCHÖRTOO’s songs and musical sketches create an atmosphere of ethereal mystery and magical folktales. KCHÖRTOO’s first full-length album SARANCHA was released on May Eve 2018.
