Kahauanu Lake was born on January 1, 1932. A self-taught musician, he put together his trio with brother Tommy and admired guitarist Al Machida. While recording only six albums, the trio would influence many Hawaiian musicians and singers who came after them, partly due to what some called his unique 'ukulele playing style and him being credited as one of the first to make the 'ukulele a lead instrument. He also wrote a number of songs that would become Hawaiian music standards. He married kumu hula (hula teacher/instructor) Margaret Ma'iki Aiu, who not only danced with the group during performances but also appeared on their albums covers, including "Hapa-Haole Hulas" and "At The Kaimana Beach Hotel In Waikiki". Lake became the chairman in the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame's advisory board. He died on March 6, 2011 at the age of 79.
