Kalpana Mazumder was born in Bihar, India and moved to the U.S. in 1973. She learned the fundamentals of music from her mother, a classical singer. From 1956 to 1960 she studied classical music. In 1967 received a B.A. in Music from Bengal Music College in Luchnow.
