Katrina "Hopey" Vasquez (1974-2000) was an immensely talented dreampop vocalist involved in the industrial\goth\shoegaze scene in Orange County. Having had many bad breaks early in her life, much of which stemmed from a broken home, Katrina worked hard to get her life in order and eventually formed the group Pumalin with shoegaze scene fixture Phil "DJ Doomie" Overeem. She had met Overeem in an alternative club around 1993-1994, and impressed him by imitating the vocals of a band they both liked. Pumalin gained some minor notoriety from posting six demo recordings to a burgeoning MP3.com, where her "achingly beautiful" vocals and the group's darker take on dreampop won them early fans. Katrina also released her own solo material under the name "Beautiful Schizophrenic," where her gorgeously melancholy voice was matched with more abrasive dreamy soundscapes. The apex of Katrina's career was Pumalin's live debut at the legendary goth club Eternal on June 18th, 2000. Driving home from the concert on an unfamiliar road, Katrina missed a sharp turn and careened into Long Beach Harbor, where she drowned. Katrina was 25. Her demo recordings, once the promising start of a talented artist, are now the faint digital ghosts of a soul snuffed out too soon, continuing to touch music fans lucky enough to discover them.
