Album US 2013 on Anvil Creations label
Rock (Experimental)
Moore heavy metal, but this time there is a move in the direction of processed sound. Phaze One was completely untreated; that is to say, all the sounds heard on the first Heavy Metal album were recorded with no additional processing....the sounds heard were the actual noises made by the instruments. Here, there are several manipulated tracks that use analog tape to alter the sonic motion of each tam-tam. PastTime explores both directions of recorded gongs, in an attempt to incorporate abstract acoustic pieces with abstract soundscapes. Indeed, the first track here, Compulsive Behavior, is slightly reminiscent of the title track from To Come Into Being, which Ken released originally in 1981. There are also two "Up Close & Personal" tracks that give the listener a view that would otherwise only be available to the performer, bringing subtle sounds into play using stereo microphones very near to the vibrating bronze. It should be noted that in listening to these pieces with some headphones or earbuds, as well as inferior speaker systems, there may be present some distortion to the loudest strikes of most gongs. These instruments are capable of producing all the sounds perceived by the human ear, as well as some that are not, so caution is advised when setting your volume levels, both for the protection of your ears and your speaker cones. A quiet environment is recommended, as many passages are meant to be presented in a quiet setting, and are hard to hear with ambient noise masking these subtle tonalities.
