Dunja Knebl’s new project, Kololira, is named after an instrument that has never been played in Croatia (hurdy gurdy is translated kololira to Croatian). Kololira is first real Dunja’s band which has been following her on her last years performance on Europian Broadcasting Union, Ethnoambient festival and various other events. After playing in Solin, on Ethnoambient festival. fRoots magazine writter, Elizabeth Kinder, wrote the following: “It was odd, or maybe perfect synchronicity, that I’d been thinking about Charlie Gillett moments before and how he might have liked the brilliant Croatian folk band Kololira that had just been playing. The ancient songs sounded so cool and modern with singer Dunja Knebl (reminding me of Nico at her best), doing what Shirley Collins did for English folk song.” A new band gives a new dimension to the old, almost forgotten Croatian songs, and brings unusual arrangements which feature specific rhythms. Some of the songs are dance songs, and some of them will take you to the past and wake a memories in you that you didnt even know exists. Except for Dunja Knebl, Kololira is: Danijel Maoduš (guitars, voice), Martin Turšić (hurdy gurdy, djembe, frame drum), Hrvoje Ban (accordion, flutes, voice).
