Folk, Classical and World
Kora Michaelian was born on the 10th November 1971 in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. From an early age she had shown an inclination to the arts. The fact that her mother Tamara Avetikova, was a musician contributed to increase her love for music. At the age of seven she was accepted at the Tschaikovsky School of Music as a pianist. Graduating with honors she continued her studies at the "Komitas" National Conservatory, where she studied composition under the great Armenian composer Edgar Hovanessian and Alfred Terterian. While she was still a student, she began composing her first music. It was one of these compositions which earned her the "Master of Arts" UNESCO title (1990). In 1994 she graduated from the conservatory with honors. In 1996 she came to Greece and formed the group "Nor Dar" (New Century) with Tigran Sarkissian and Orestis Moustidis. The first album of Nor Dar, "Opus of the Lizard" is dedicated to Komitas. Kora uses melodies from the Armenian musical tradition as a base and recomposes them, giving them a new breath of life. At the second album, "Ampel'a", Nor Dar meet the great world famous singer Lakshmi Shankar. "Letters Home" is their third album, that follows the trend of 'Opus of the Lizard'. Her excellent knowledge in orchestration gave Kora very fast recognition in the music community of Greece. She orchestrated albums for Nikos Xydakis, Michalis Nikoloudis, Giorgos Maglaras, Stella Gadedi, Thanasis Papakonstantinou and many others. On the 4th July 2001 Kora departed for the long journey, taking within her heart the beauty of her homeland that she loved so much. The music of this very significant musician shall accompany us. At April 2003 Kora's last album was released posthumously, "In the Land of frozen Water", a postmodern musical fairytale about love.
