Album 2009 on Left Hand Records label
Electronic (Abstract, Acid Jazz, Experimental, Ambient)
The first volume in Kristian Day’s “Education” series dates back to the years 2001 through 2004 while he was still in high school. During his time in school he never took a single music class. Everything was self taught. He experimented with various computer programs to see what type of sounds they would make. However he didn’t like the sounds that were considered “presets”. So he recorded his own using tape recorders and objects around the house. “Protozoa Drops” Although he never heard the piece prior this recording, an school instructor informed him about a musician/composer named Hugh Le Caine had recorded a piece of music with a simple drop of water played at different pitches and speeds. This piece was recorded based on that idea. This was also Kristian’s first song to have ever received radio play on Cedar Rapids, Iowa’s KCCK’s program “Hearts of Space”. “Black Winds” All of these sounds were recorded in a bathroom with a single microphone. They consist of water movement and an empty soda can. Digital treatments were performed afterwords. “Asian Chambers” Recorded on a fall night in 2003. First use of a keyboard and glass percussion. “Die Kapellenliebhaber” First use of a sequencer. Recorded during the spring of 2004 “Kool Aid Party” Toy piano, African thumb piano, and music box. Processed through four different delay units. The stuff that horror films are made from. “Blood Dance” Winter of 2003/2004 saw the purchase of an e-bow. This piece was made with a looped cello arrangement, a music box gears, and the e-bow. This was also the first song to have ever been performed live. “Black Butterflys” Kristian was a huge fan of Kevin Moore’s (of Dream Theater) solo project, Chroma Key. This was the first experiment using samples from vinyl (as purchased from the local thrift stores). “Henry” Inspired by the character from David Lynch’s “Eraserhead”, this piece was the first recording made using a Micro Korg. “Worker Ants” Loop experiment with circuit bent speak & spell, filters, and delays. “Who Sleeps Anyways?” This could almost be considered dub music. A live drum kit mixed with organ pads and African percussion. “Old Movies” Recorded on accident. Chance effect. Always have the record button on.
