Single AU 1992 on Dali Records label
Rock (Doom Metal, Stoner Rock)
Released in 1992 by Festival Records Pty. Ltd. Australia and Festival Records (N.Z.) Ltd. The blurb on the rear cover reads: KYUSS Four young musicians from the small Southern California municipality of Palm Desert, describe their sound as a "fresh hit of potent, sticky and hairy musical salvation." The band's line-up includes Brant Bjork on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, Nick Oliveri on bass and John Garcia on vocals. Their debut album, WRETCH, was released on Dali Records in November of 1991. Kyuss credits the musical vacuum of suburban desert life as the progenitor of their sound. Homme and Bjork played music together since elementary school days. By the time they reached junior high, they'd formed a band which covered a repertoire of Motorhead ad Discharge. After just thirteen Los Angeles gigs, including the infamous Whiskey-A-Go-Go, Kyuss were signed to Dali. The youngest members of the group, Homme and Bjork, were still in high school. A bare-bones, pile-in-a-van tour across country was launched last summer, culminating with an appearance at the New Music Seminar. WRETCH arrived at college and metal radio in the fall garnering critical admiration: "Kyuss holds all the promise of a band on the edge", The Hard Report; "They manage to beat their riff-heavy songs into perfect submission", Billboard; "everything a rock group should be -- young, raw, loud, and hot", The LA Reader. BLUES FOR THE RED SUN, Kyuss' September 1992 release, takes their scorching desert-rock sound one step further. Produced by Master Of Reality, Chris Goss, an overall concept for the album emerged. Drummer Bjork compares it to "a heavy version of Pink Floyd."
