Album US 1990 on Summerfest Recordings label
Classical (Classical)
Of the seven sonatas recorded here, only four are considered to be written by J.S. Bach without question. BWV 1030, 1032, 1034 and 1035 were probably written between 1717 and 1723 in Cothen, although BWV 1030 was revised by Bach in the 1730's. Bach obviously intended to revise first movement which is not recorded here. While the two sonatas (BWV 1030 and 1032) are for flute and harpsichord obbligato, the other two sonatas (BWV 1034 and 1035) are for flute and basso continuo. In these, the harpsichord part is improvised above a baseline, which according to historical practice is played by a third instrument, a cello in this case.
