Lawrence Gellert, born 1898 in Budapest, Hungary, died 1979. He came to the United States at age seven and grew up in New York City. During the years 1924 to 1937 he made field recordings of African-American singers in North and South Carolina and Georgia, some of which was first released on a limited edition LP in the early 1970s, later followed by further releases.
