voc, 1961-1994 AU, Sunshine, Victoria
Musician of Electronic and Rock
Born in Sunshine, Australia 26 March 1961, died in Middlesex Hospital, London 31st December 1994. Larger than life Australian, club host at Taboo, fashion designer and , later on, a life model for Lucian Freud and performance artist/singer with Minty. Bowery was a performer and a costume designer for the Michael Clark Company. For many years he was the face of 80s London nightlife. He famously sported an outlandishly different look each week at the club - ranging from latex body paint drips on his bald head, or a exquisite head/mouth wear - to simply dancing along the dancefloor half naked. In 1993 Bowery briefly formed the band Raw Sewage with leading clubbers Sheila Tequila and Stella Stein. His second band, Minty, was formed in 1993 by Leigh Bowery and Richard Torry. Bowery was Art Director for the Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" video and acted a prostitute on Boy Georges "Generations Of Love" video. Boy George recorded a tribute song on his 1995 album, Cheapness and Beauty. The track is called "Satan's Butterfly Ball" and in his Taboo musical, the Leigh Bowery character sings tracks like "Ich Bin Kunst" and "I'll Have You All".
