Born in Melbourne in 1946, Gilbert studied piano with Leslie Miers until 1964. He was a founding member of The Wild Cherries (playing bass), and began studying for a degree in architecture at La Trobe University in the mid-seventies. Abandoning this, however, he has since become a successful composer, especially of sound installations. With his multi-media design and production company, Sound Design Studio, Gilbert has created sound installations for the Osaka Aquarium in Japan, the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, the National Zoo in Washington, Kakadu National Park interpretation centre, and the South Australian Maritime Museum. His installation at the Sydney Aquarium resulted in his being invited to attend the 1989 Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, where his composition, Kakadu Soundscape, was performed on the banks of the Danube.
