Liz Smith, MBE (born 11 December 1921, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England - died 26 December 2016) was a British actress. She is perhaps best known for her role as "Nana" in the BBC comedy series The Royle Family. In 1984, Liz Smith received a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Maggie Smith's mother in A Private Function. In 2009, she was was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), the same year that she retired from acting.
