1883-1960
A.k.a. Alonzo (Lon) Megargee III
Born 1883 Died January 1960 Considered "the Dean of Arizona Cowboy Artists," Lon Megargee's painting history is vast. Around 1913, Megargee was commissioned by Arizona's First Governor, George W.P. Hunt to create 15 murals for the Arizona State Capitol building to celebrate Arizona's first active government. While living at Casa Hermosa, he painted three additional murals for the city library as part of the Work Project Administration (WPA) under President Roosevelt. These strikingly colorful murals are of three life-size male figures: an Indian, a Priest, and a Farmer, with different aspects of their lives illustrated in the background.
