The London Improvisers Orchestra was born from the embers of Butch Morris' London Skyscraper tour for the Contemporary Music Network tour in November 1997. Concerts were performed in London, Birmingham, Oxford, Manchester, Bristol and Liverpool. Members of the ensemble decided to develop the project and thus was born the London Improvisers Orchestra. For eleven months of the year, the orchestra performs on the first Sunday of the month (excluding January). At present venues vary except for a quarterly residency (once every 3 months) at Cafe Oto in Dalston. The members meet prior to the gig for a rehearsal so anybody who has an idea about how to control a group of individuals who take pleasure in not being controlled, can rehearse what they would like to do. These pieces mixed in with freely improvised sections, make up the performance at 8.30.
