Love Tangle began as a side-project of guitarist Tom McPoyle during the Harbor Gentleman period, with the drummer from Tom's previous band Horsehead, Phil Kavanaugh. High school friends John-Paul Kramer and Jason Attig soon joined as electronic accompaniment. Only one record was created under this name before they split, and Phil and Tom decided to re-christen the band Steal Compass Drive North.
