Maâlem Mokhtar Gania is the son of musician Maâlem Boubker Gania, and the fourth and surviving brother of gnawa musicians Maâlem Mahmoud Gania (or Guinia), Maâlem Abdelah Gania and Maâlem Bilal ”Lahzen Zitoune” Gania. He has played with his older brother Mahmoud in many concerts, and in addition to traditional graoua music festivals, he has performed live and recorded with some of the same musicians, i.e. Bill Laswell, Hamid Drake, Peter Brotzmann, Jamie Saft, Hamid Drake, Jason Adasiewicz etc. He leads the group Mokhtar Gania & Africa Gnawa Experience
