END OF MY SLEEVE NOTES In response to the standard convention of including sleeve notes for an album, these are notes that have issued from just beyond the end of my right sleeve (a quip that undoubtedly will have been used before), as a weeny answer to a fleeting question, “What or who on earth is this?” I write songs and play guitar. As Mahabongo, I have released two previous albums: 'Swish It’s Everywhere' (2008), which is a bit more jazzy; and 'Minus Ridiculous' (2012), which is a collection of recordings drawn from five albums of what are really demos that I made, mostly at home, in the late 1980s and 1990s. 'Murmuration' is our new album. I live in Hove, on the south coast of England, ‘twixt the sea, that mighty presence, and the rolling, evergreen, all-weather South Downs. Nearly all of these songs were written in the last few years, though ‘Squirrels As Usual’ was originally recorded twenty years ago. Partly by art and partly by chance, the ideas for these songs became arranged, produced, and somewhat arbitrarily frozen for aural consumption. It was a very interesting and enjoyable process. Another of my activities is academic research, primarily in Indian religious history but also in philosophy. I’ve written and lecture on yoga, soma, Indian ascetics (sādhus), and related topics. This album started a few years ago and proceeded haphazardly, recorded with friends in Huyton, Totnes, Warminster, London, Brighton and Hove. Everyone involved was amazing, very generously giving time, expertise and enthusiasm.
