Band, *1990 US, Detroit
Rock
Hailing from Detroit, Majesty Crush was one of the few American rock groups which belonged to the "shoegazer" genre popularized in the UK in the late 1980s and early 1990s. While incorporating the same lush, dreamy sound as other shoegazer acts of the time, it was the lyrics of Majesty Crush songs that set them apart from all other artists of the genre. Vocalist David Stroughter's often strange and obsessive lyrics cover such subjects as stalking Jodie Foster, a female cashier at an adult book store, actresses, tennis stars and Italian porn stars. Majesty Crush released only one full-length album on the Warner subsidiary Dali/Chameleon Records entitled "Love 15" in 1993. Among their other notable releases are 1992's "Fan" EP and 1994's "Sans Muscles" EP. The band broke up in the mid 1990s. Stroughter went on to form a similar outfit called P.S. I Love You and drummer Odell Nails went on to perform with Astrobrite and Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. In 2007, Full Effect Records released the Best Of retrospective "I Love You In Other Cities."
