Manfred Papst was (born in Davos in 1956) studied Sinology, German and Art History in Zurich from 1975 to 1983, which he completed with a thesis on the translatability of Chinese poetry. After that he completed until 1987 still a supplementary study in history. He worked freelance as a proofreader, editor, translator and publisher for various publishers and worked as a German teacher. He worked for the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) in the edition of the works and letters of Friedrich Glauser. From 1989 to 2001 he was the program director of the NZZ-Buchverlag. From 2002 to 2017, Papbst was the head of the NZZ Culture Department on Sunday, where he continues to be a member of the cultural editorial department.
