Luthier, Manny Boumakis is a first generation Greek-American, born and raised in Queens, New York. His involvemen [from early age] with Cretan social clubs in N.Y. cultivated a love for Cretan music. While visiting Crete during the winter of 2011, Manny was introduced to, and forged a strong friendship with Manolis Stagakis, whose name is at the forefront of the traditional Cretan instrument Lyre “the Lyra.” Under his guidance he was introduced to various techniques used to construct traditional Cretan instruments. During this trip he was urged by Stagakis to experiment with building his first Cretan lute. Although he already possessed extensive knowledge of woodworking due to his profession as a master carpenter, he had never constructed an instrument. Manny returned to New York with materials and insight needed to construct his first Cretan lute. This was an exciting time during what became the beginning of his career as a luthier.
