Marteau Rouge (meaning 'Red Hammer') is a French experimental electroacoustic free improv duo, founded in 1992 by Jean-Marc Foussat on VSC 11 synthesizer and vocals, Makoto Sato on drums/percussion and Jean-François Pauvros on electric guitar. The group self-released their debut ... Un Jour Se Lève album in 1998; it was later re-issued on LP by Foussat's Fou Records. For over fifteen years, Marteau Rouge has been performing live in Paris and around France, often accompanied by guest performers, such as Daunik Lazro, Itaru Oki, Keiji Haino, Joe McPhee, Wasis Diop, Maki Nakano, Rasul Siddik, Médéric Collignon, and dancers Maki Watanabe, Yuko Kametani, and Gyohei Zaitsu. The trio shared the stage with other groups, including La STPO and Sonic Youth. In 2000, Hat Hut Records planned a live CD documenting Marteau Rouge's 1999 tour, with large excerpts from the trio concert at the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Marseille, as well as quartet pieces with Joe McPhee recorded at Instants Chavirés in Montreuil, and performance at the Music Action Festival in Vandœuvre, but it was never published. Marteau Rouge gave a few concerts with legendary American saxophonist Evan Parker. In 2008, Gérard Terronès recorded two sets with Parker at The Sunset, Paris, originally to be released by his Marge label, but eventually published on Live CD by In Situ. Marteau Rouge's last concert took place in Biarritz on Nov 25, 2016. In 2004, Marteau Rouge recorded two sessions at Studio Campus, with and without an audience, after Rectangle invited the trio to produce an album. Unfortunately, the label ceased its activities shortly after. Noir, Marteau Rouge's only studio album to date, was finally released by Gaffer Records in 2012.
