Compil. 2017 on Not Now Music label
R&B/Soul (Soul)
Marvin Gaye’s life lasted a mere 45 years, his span as a recording artist and performer barely half that. As a star of the Tamla Motown label, he enjoyed two separate careers, the first singing the words of others and the second as one of a new breed of singer, songwriter and performer broadening soul’s boundaries to reflect a changing world. A troubled genius, Marvin Gaye nevertheless managed to touch many lives with his music and these live recordings from towards the end of his career give a taste of the stature and importance of one of black music’s leading lights. As long as we can listen to music like this, that light shines on.
