Musician / Composer
Massimiliano Viel studied piano, electronic music, composition and conducting with, among the others, Azio Corghi, Klaus Huber, Brian Ferneyhough, Franco Donatoni e Tristan Murail. Being a composer, a keyboard player, a sound designer, he had the opportunity to work with ensemble and orchestras all over Europe and with composers such as Luciano Berio and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In the meantime he developed his personal aesthetic research and his technical skills composing works for acoustic & electronic instruments, soloists & orchestras. His works have been internationally performed at, among the others, Milano Musica Festival, Festival Synthèse Bourges, Zeppelin Barcelona, Klangforum Heidelberg. Intrigued by the relationship between music and the other forms of art & expression, he realized theater, video and dance performances such as EVE (1996), live performance for electronic music, live music, an actor, paintings and video, realized at the Triennale in Milan; ID (2006), an interactive dance performance, premièred at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York. Since 1999 he got in touch with "other" music of today culture, practicing the Djing art, and producing works from pop to techno. In 2001 he met the audiovisual collective Otolab (first prize at Netmage Festival Bologna in 2003) with whom he developed a number of projects internationally performed. In 2002 he founded Sincronie, a cultural association devoted to the promotion and organization of music events, research and didactics. He is author of works & articles in the field of musicology and didactics, and Professor of Composition for Didactics at the Conservatory of Bolzano, where he teaches also Live electronics and Theory and Analysis of Electroacoustic music.
