Mastabear was born in Novi Sad, where he received a classical musical education. As a teenager, he got a taste of oriental rythms. Studying in Paris, he supported himself playing piano in Parisian restaurants and bars, developing a taste for jazz. Moving north, he played funk and blues in pubs of Dublin. Coming back to Yugoslavia, he did his first studio recordings and met with the boys from Modern Quartet.
