Short Black, Melbourne's newest label, fires out of the blocks with Matt Kennedy's Together at 2am. Put together as part of his final year at university, the sample-heavy EP draws on old records discovered in Melbourne's various record shops. The A-side sees Kennedy pushing a gentle contemporary sound, with the pastel-streaked title track. Its tribal drums and hypnotic chords are the stuff of dancefloor bliss. "Nesting" dials back the tempo, cruising lazily through a forest of bells and fleeting vocals. On the B-side, a more traditional, American-influenced sound takes hold. Here, Larry Heard's legacy is audible in the warm bounce of "Blue Eyes," where a blocky bassline provides most of the propulsion. "Taking Flack" nods to Detroit's house scene, funky bass licks and disco synths combining for a dancefloor number that's as sweet as honey. This side is about Kennedy paying tribute to his musical heroes, but the result is wholly his own.
