The flutist and saxophonist Mauro Senise was celebrated as a big attraction at the Free Jazz and the Chivas Jazz Festivals, and applauded as a member of the group Cama de Gato. He has participated in the making of several records and is the best evidence of the success of instrumental music in Brazil. Senise was born in May 1950, in Rio de Janeiro, the grandson of philosopher Alceu Amoroso Lima. He started his career in 70’s. Studied classical flute with Odette Ernest Dias and saxophone with Paulo Moura, two masters that Mauro considers as fundamental for his career. For many years, he played and recorded with other great masters such as Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Wagner Tiso and Luis Eça. He also recorded with the greatest names from Popular Brazilian Music. But his aim always was to become a soloist. In the beginning of his career, Senise was a member of the group Mandengo, along with Tomás Improta, Tony Botelho, Raul Mascarenhas, Barrozinho, and Duduka da Fonseca. Later on, he made two records as a special guest with Grupo Um, composed of Lelo Nazário, Zé Eduardo Nazário and Zeca Assumpção. He was a founder of group Alquimia, along with Robertinho Silva, Zeca Assumpção, and André Delquech. From 1974 and 1978, he was a member of the Rio Jazz Orquestra. Throughout his career, Mauro Senise has played with some of the greatest representatives of Brazilian instrumental music, among whom are Robertinho Silva, Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, Luiz Alves, Hugo Fattoruso, Nenê, Osmar Milito, Antonio Adolfo, Marinho Boffa, Toninho Horta, Victor Assis Brasil, Rui Quaresma, Cristóvão Bastos, Helvius Vilela, Wanderley Pereira, Alberto Chimelli, Nelson Faria, Ricardo Costa, André Tandeta, Bruce Henry, Eloir de Moraes, Nelson Ayres, Marcio Montarroyos, Fernando Moraes, Dario Galante, Idriss Boudriouha, Vittor Santos, Maurtício Einhorn, Marcelo Martins, Nivaldo Ornellas, Marcos Nimrichter, Ivan Conti, Paulinho Trumpete, Paulo Russo, Itamar Assiere, Jota Moraes, Arthur Maia, Rique Pantoja, Alberto Continentino, Pascoal Meirelles, Mingo Araújo, André Neiva e Gilson Peranzetta. He received many awards, among which are the Playboy trophy and the Brahma Extra de Revelação Instrumental award (Instrumental Revelation) for the whole of his works. He performed around Europe with Egberto Gismonti and in Spain, France, Belgium, and the United States with Cama de Gato. He has launched six CDs with this group. Together with Rosana Lanzelotte (harpsichord) and David Chew (cello), Mauro forms a classical trio that presents pieces by Bach, Handel, Tellemann, Mozart, Villa-Lobos, and many other great composers. In 1988, Mauro made his first solo record, Mauro Senise, and the second, Jade, in the following year. In a partnership with composer, pianist, and arranger Gilson Peranzzetta, he launched two more CDs: Uma Parte de Nós and Vera Cruz. In 1995, Mauro recorded in New York, in a duet with the excellent guitar and electric guitar player Romero Lubambo, an album with the standards of Brazilian popular music, plus compositions by Romero and Nilson Matta, who has a special participation in the CD. In 1995, Senise also recorded with saxophonist Raul Mascarenhas the CD Pressão Alta, launched in January 1997. In October of that same year, Mauro performed at the 12th Free Jazz Festival, alongside Raul, and received warm compliments from the critics and the public. After the participation of Cama de Gato in the Aruba Festival, the group launched its sixth CD, Água de Chuva. In August 1998, he was invited to the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, in Finland, where he was the soloist of Radamés Gnatalli and Villa-Lobos pieces. In May 1999, he launched his seventh solo CD, Virtuoso. In August 2000, he launched the CD Quinteto Pixinguinha, from a group formed in 1973, of which he was one of the founders together with flutist Kim Ribeiro. That same year, he was invited to participate in the Projeto Aquarius as soloist with the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra, in a concert for over 20 thousand people, at the Copacabana Fortress. Mauro has been a soloist in eight Projeto Aquarius shows, among which are the George Martin and The Beatles’ Music concert, with the producer and arranger of all the records of the famous Liverpool quartet. This show brought together an audience of over 100 thousand people at the Quinta da Boa Vista. For the last six years, sENISE has participated as soloist in the Rio International Cello Encounter, an event that reunites the best national and international instrumentalists. In June 2000, Mauro performed at the opening show for the 53º Congresso Internacional de Jornalismo (53th International Congress of Journalism), the WAN 2000, that brought to Rio de Janeiro more than 3 thousand journalists from all over the world; it was the first congress of this entity to take place in Latin America. In June 2001, Senise launched the CD Dançando nas Nuvens, with his quartet, received with enthusiasm by the critics. The shows for the launching of this CD, at the Mistura Fina, exceeded the house’s capacity in terms of public. Also in June of that same year, the Mauro Senise Quartet was invited to participate in the 2nd Chivas Jazz Festival, in Rio and São Paulo, along with major jazz names of the moment. The Mauro senise Quartet was pointed out by the reviews as one of the highlights of the festival. In October 2001, Senise performed in New York with Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, Duduka da Fonseca e Hélio Alves. In Rio, together with the Trio da Paz, he performed alongside American pianist Kenny Barron. In April 2002, Mauro launched another solo CD, Vênus, where he reunites Brazilian compositions that have names women and were composed by some of the greatest names of our music (Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, Dorival Caymmi, Gilson Peranzzetta, Pixinguinha, and Ari Barroso, among others). Vênus marks the summit of Mauro Senise’s phonographic career, with arrangements by Gilson Peranzzetta, Roberto Araújo, Jota Moraes, and Vittor Santos. In May 2002, Mauro performed at the Lincoln Center, in New York, in the show The Music by Pixinguinha, directed by guitarist Romero Lubambo, with the participation of Romero himself, Nilson Matta, Duduka da Fonseca, Sérgio Brandão and Cyro Baptista, and with the special participation of Paula Robison, one of the main American classical flutists. The show happened for three successive days, with full house and enthusiastic reviews in American publications. In 2003, Senise launched the CD Frente a Frente, the third one of his duet with Gilson Peranzzetta. In 2004, he play with Cama de Gato in Quito, Equador, for two thousand people in the National Theatre. In 2005, he releases Tempo Caboclo, a new CD with music from Brazilian classic composers, among others, Villa-Lobos, Guerra-Peixe, Lorenzo Fernandez, Chiquinha Gonzaga and Claudio Santoro. Tempo Caboclo won Latin Grammy 2006 in Classical Music category. He also released another CD, “Extra de Vários”, with pianist Gilson Peranzzetta and cellist David Chew. In this same year, he toured Europe with Cama de Gato, a quintet founded by him and Pascoal Meirelles. The group performed at Malta Jazz Festival, in Malta Island, and at Jazz at Juan, in France. In 2006, when his carrier celebrated 35 years, Mauro releases his new CD, “Casa Forte – Mauro Senise toca Edu Lobo”, only with music by the great master. The arrangements are by Gilson Peranzzetta. Edu Lobo makes a special feature in “Canção do Amanhecer”. In 2007, Senise releases the DVD “Casa Forte – Mauro Senise toca Edu Lobo”, recorded at Sala Cecíla Meireles, in Rio. In 2008, he releases “Êxtase”, fourth CD by his duo with pianist and composer Gilson Peranzzetta. In the same year, Senise releases “Caixa de Música” (“Music Box”), a CD recorded with pianist Kiko Continentino and guitar player Leonardo Amuedo. In May, 2009, Mauro releases another solo project at Biscoito Fino, the CD “Lua Cheia”(“Fool Moon”), with compositions by Dolores Duran and Sueli Costa, with arrangements by Gilson Peranzzetta. In the same year, this CD is indicated to Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album. In December, 2009, Mauro releases “Melodia Sentimental”, with Gilson Peranzzetta and harpist Silvia Braga. In 2010, celebrating 20 years of partnership with Peranzzetta, Senise releases “Linha de Passe”, a CD with Brazilian standards.
