I Can Hew Boys / Lady Dainty - (David Dodds / Trad arr Mawkin) Dave first heard this sung by the late great shanty singer Johnny Collins. We think it conjures imagery of folks carving away in the dirt and darkness. We doubt people who danced to this 'dainty' Playford tune had any business being in a mine. 2. Jolly Well Drunk - (Trad arr Mawkin) A protest song to get drunk to. Found on Mudcat.org by searching for drinking songs. Amazing to think this dates back to the 1800's yet still is very much relevant in today's economic climate. 3. Song On The Times - (Trad arr Mawkin) Written after the repeal of the corn laws, another protest song first heard sung by those tub thumping Chumbawambas. 4. Birds Upon A Tree - (W C Robey arr Mawkin) A jolly fellow who enjoys a twitter. Possibly a song of double entendre but perhaps a rare occasion where the truth is really that simple. 5. Branle DeCosse / Vergers / Napoleon In Morocco (Trad / Nigel Eaton / Nigel Eaton arr Mawkin) A really old French dance tune and two more recent tunes from the Hurdy Gurdy of Nigel. 6. Wreckers On The Shore (Anon arr Mawkin) A ship wreckers song, false lights and a rocky shore. Originally transcribed from an old letter from Dr Benjamin Strobel - a notorious Floridian who liked an adventure - this song dates back to 1830 and originally was set in Florida. 7. Searching For Lambs (Trad arr Mawkin) A very popular song with great versions being sung by everyone and his dog. This particular variant is from the Steeleye Span version. 8. Tadin Tinaketa / Haudanmaan Hääpolska (Trad / Trad arr James Delarre and Nick Cooke) A Breton tune learnt from the playing of the Breton band Skolvan and a Finnish Polska traditionally played at weddings. 9. My Love Farewell / Judgement (Trad / Trad arr Mawkin) A song stolen from Eliza Carthy who stole it from Jody Stetcher and Kate Brislin. We first heard Eliza sing it when we supported her at the now defunct Loughborough Festival. The tune is an old Swedish vocal tune first heard from the playing of the great Swedish clarinetist Esbjorn Wettermark learnt from Aisling Holmes in Sheffield. 10. Shanghai Brown (Trad arr Mawkin) We like to think of this as an 'Anti-Shanty' - one of the few songs that tells the listener to stay at home with your wife- no gallivanting around the world shagging young pretty maidens for this sailor! 11. Young May Moon (Trad arr Mawkin) A lovely old english tune, apparently performed in children's playgrounds. First heard from the concertina of Nick Hart. Thanks to: Fiona, Eli, Cat, Suzannah and Mawkin’s first baby Eider. A Mawkin big up for Pete Thomas. To our families who have shown us huge support through what has been such a big project. Spot the Dog. Rebellion Brewery for supporting us and doing what you do best (brewing the best beer in the country). Elly Lucas, Eliza Carthy, JJ & Newby for your help
