Musician of Latin
Classically trained Mexican bass player from Guadalajara who immigrated to San Francisco, California, in the 1930s. A founder of the Latin music scene in the Bay Area, he formed a dance band that played boleros and danzones and other contemporary Mexican music at places like the Sailors of the Pacific Union Hall (now the Maritime Hall). In the 1940s, his orchestra became the house band at Sweet's Ballroom across the Bay in Oakland, where they played at Sunday afternoon dance parties called tardeadas. In 1947, he founded a record label, Guadalajara, that recorded Latin music.
