Merle E. Hogg (b. ~1923) is an American trombonist and music educator, emeritus professor of music at San Diego State University. He was born in Kansas and completed undergraduate studies at the Emporia State University. After serving in the Navy, Hogg entered the University of Iowa and received M.A, M.F.A, and Ph.D. degrees there. Merle E. Hogg went to France and attended Ecoles d'Art Américaines (American Conservatory) in Fontainebleau during the summer of 1960, where he studied composition with Nadia Boulanger and trombone with Gabriel Masson and Jean Douay. As a music teacher, Merle Hogg worked at the Eastern New Mexico University for nine years, and had been a member of the music department faculty at San Diego State University from 1962 to 1992.
