Musician / Composer of R&B/Soul
Guitarist and composer. Best known for his work with Ian Dury, Merlin began his career as a studio musician playing guitar with a wide range of artists including Ric Lee (Ten Years After), members of Family, keyboard-player Chris Parren (Jim Capaldi, Maggie Bell), George Hargreaves with Mel Gaynor ('Simple Minds' drummer), Colin McKenzie, Robert Awai and Chris Cameron (George Michael's MD). Merlin continued his flourishing session career throughout the early eighties recording with Martin Dobson's "Main Course" and playing for Mo Ahijo's African/Funk fusion band Koush. While focusing on his own band "Lip Service", Merlin was still in demand as a session player. "Lip Service" signed to EMI and almost simultaneously Merlin was asked to record and tour with Ian Dury. From this point Merlin wrote, recorded and performed with a number of top acts and producers including Ellis, Beggs and Howard, Tom Robinson, Alan Wilder from Depeche Mode, Ian Dury and the Blockheads and Baxter Dury. Merlin continues to work with members of the Blockheads and writes music for various television production companies.
