A.k.a. Taara Tati
Metal Mother hails from the edge of familiarity, by way of the dregs of Oakland, California. In her dark-wave-avant-dance project, vocalist, pianist, and producer, Taara Tati, mixes provocative and thunderous beats with enigmatic vocal layering and synthetic industrial heaviness, to conjure an obscure and sentimental sonic simplex. Tati’s debut album, ‘Bonfire Diaries’, was released in May, 2011, on Tati’s newly formed label, Post Primal. The dreamy ‘dirt-wave’ album featured an array of other Oakland-based musicians, including Tommy Cappell of Beats Antique, and Micha Grainger of The Yard Dogs Road Show. The 11 songs were mixed by Jeremy Black, of Apollo Sunshine. The release was followed by a music video for the song ‘Shake’, along with consistent west-coast touring with her newly formed band of Connor Morrison (keyboards), and Jeremy Ciccone (drums). With praise from a flurry of publications including MTV Iggy, USA Today, BUST Magazine, VICE, Bay Area Guardian, and a cover story for Performer Magazine, the project gathered momentum into 2012. Metal Mother was also listed as a ‘Best of 2011’ band by SF Bay Guardian, The Deli Magazine, and ‘A Darker Side of Pagan’ music blog. In May 2012, Tati harnessed inspiration from traveling she had done in Ireland and Scotland, and began production of her second album, this time in her own home studio. The collection of songs was primarily inspired by the ancients sites of the Pagans/Druids that she had visited, though as production took place in the heart of the Oakland grit, it became a mix of intense reverence and brazen apocalyptic party music. After pre-production was complete, she took the 11 song album to producer and engineer, David Earl, for the final stages of sonic fortification. The album, titled ‘Ionika’, was released late February, 2013. Festival dates are featuring new, unreleased tracks, and the official video for Mind_Off was released in February 2014 on YouTube. Metal Mother is inspired by the color black, by prisms and parties, forgotten memes, arcane archetypes, existential underworlds, science fiction and all things ultra-TERREstrial.. Be ready, behold, a raw and theurgical offering of maternalline metallescence, to seduce the wicked into the garden.
