Michael Eckert (b. 1950) is an American composer and professor of composition and music theory at the University of Iowa. Eckert studied composition with John Richard Ronsheim at Antioch College and with Ralph Shapey at the University of Chicago, receiving an M.A. in music history and theory in 1975 and the Ph.D. in composition in 1977. He received various awards for his compositions, including the Bearns Prize from Columbia University and Charles E. Ives Scholarship from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In 2006, Eckert's Vamp for string orchestra was a finalist selection at the "Homage to Mozart" International Competition for Composers held by Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, which performed the piece in Moscow and New York. As a historian and musical theorist, Eckert is particularly interested in the Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola, as well as Renaissance music and works of Johannes Ockeghem.
