American writer, musician and academic, he lives in New York City with his wife, composer Ellen Mandel. Author of many books, among them: Rock Folk (1971); Boogie Lightning (1975); How to Succeed in Show Business by Really Trying (1985); Writing and Life (1995); Ray Charles: Man and Music (1999); Flashbacks (2003); Rock Folk, Ray Charles: Man and Music and Real Writing. Lydon has also written for the New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Village Voice. Lydon is a member of ASCAP and on the faculty of St. John's University.
