Mihai Constantin

1915-1970 RO

A.k.a. Lache Găzaru

Romanian musican, born 1915 in Poiana Mare, Dolj - died 1970 in Desa, Dolj. Described by a Romanian ethnomusicologist as "a volcano of sound", Mihai Constantin's style was unusual and raw, using only his fiddle and thick voice. He lived most of his life in the village of Desa, playing at local weddings, funerals and baptisms. In 1951, Alexandru Amzulescu invited him for the first time in an improvised studio in Bucharest.
