Musician of Rock
Bassist brother of Crosscut Saw drummer Steve Howell (2). Growing up as a teenager in Sarasota, Florida, music was kind of a "family business" for Mike, who often performed with his brother Steve on drums. Mikes started his first band, Works, performing the music of the Beatles, Stones and other British Invasion bands. In 1979 Mike and brother Steve joined southern blues-rock band Crosscut Saw. Along with frontman and harp player Pat Ramsey and lead guitarist Juilen Kasper the band became a top draw in clubs and bars all up and down the Eastern Seaboard. The band would go on to open for artists like B.B. King, the Nighthawks and, of course, Johnny Winter, touring the length of the east coast. Crosscut Saw played the circuit for five years or so, and released a single album, Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know, on the independent Surprise label. The band remained together until 1983, when they decided to go there separate ways.
